PM Kisan Yojana: ₹6,000 Scheme for Farmers – How to Apply, Status, Benefits

Small farmers are the backbone of India. They grow the food we eat, but often face many struggles – low income, weather problems, and rising costs. To support these farmers, the Government of India started a very helpful scheme: Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN).

In 2025, the scheme continues to provide financial support directly into farmers’ bank accounts, making their lives a little easier and their crops more secure. With the recent release of the 17th installment, the government once again showed its commitment to our annadaata.

What is PM-KISAN Yojana?

Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) is a Central Government scheme launched in December 2018. Under this scheme, eligible farmers receive ₹6,000 every year, in three equal installments of ₹2,000, directly into their bank account through DBT (Direct Benefit Transfer).

This amount may seem small, but for small and marginal farmers, it helps manage seed, fertilizer, and basic expenses during crop seasons. The money reaches them without any middleman or corruption.

The scheme is fully funded by the Government of India and is being implemented across all states and union territories.

Who Can Apply?

The PM-KISAN scheme is mainly for small and marginal landholder farmers, but in 2020 it was expanded to include all eligible farmers across India, regardless of the land size they own.

Eligibility criteria:

  • The farmer must be an Indian citizen
  • The farmer should own cultivable land
  • Land records must be available in the name of the applicant
  • Aadhaar card and bank account should be linked
  • Institutional landholders, taxpayers, and professionals like doctors, engineers, government employees, etc., are not eligible

What Benefits Will Farmers Get?

  • ₹6,000 per year in 3 easy installments (₹2,000 every 4 months)
  • Direct credit into bank account – no paperwork, no middlemen
  • Benefits continue as long as the land ownership and eligibility remain valid
  • SMS and online status alerts for each installment
  • Can be used for buying seeds, fertilizers, or daily farming needs

This scheme is especially beneficial during monsoon or drought seasons when farmers have fewer earnings and high expenses.

What is the Latest Update (2025)?

In June 2025, the 17th installment was released by the Prime Minister for over 8.5 crore farmers. The total amount disbursed crossed ₹2.80 lakh crore since the launch of the scheme.

Here’s what’s new in 2025:

  • e-KYC is now mandatory for all beneficiaries
  • Aadhaar-linked bank account is required to receive payment
  • Government is encouraging farmers to update their land records online
  • Integration with Agri Stack is in progress for better benefit delivery
  • PM-KISAN app is updated with new features for status checking and updates
